The National Council of Women of Malta was founded in 1964. It is a non-governmental organization comprising individual members and national organizations. It is non-partisan, non-sectarian and independent. It is a co-ordinating body that aims to present a broad and comprehensive view of women’s opinions on matters of public interest. It aims to improve the quality of life for all. In particular it works to promote equality of opportunity for women and enable them to participate effectively at all levels and in all aspects of the life of the community.

NCW always insisted on promoting education. For this reason, the NCW fosters key educational sectors – health, social issues, environmental issues, music and business. Regular Lifelong Learning programs are held at the NCW offices in Blata l-Bajda, where both men and women take courses in languages, maths and digital skills.

The National Council of Women provides a forum for women of different backgrounds and experiences to come together as individuals and as representatives of affiliated organizations, to exchange information and ideas, formulate policy, educate and promote change.

NCW Malta supports local and national efforts to end violence against women and girls: several NGOs empower women to claim their rights and direct the society at large towards “Zero Tolerance” However, violence against women and domestic violence are still real problems that are on the increase. In many cases it is still a hidden phenomenon which leads to a situation where all forms of violence against women seriously violate women’s rights and fundamental freedoms and constitute a major impediment to the ability of women to make use of their capabilities.

Today, Maltese women can consider themselves in a better position as a result of gender equality legislation which has made remarkable changes, although relevant practical measures are still an uphill struggle. Indeed, the past century has witnessed incredible improvements to women’s economic, political and social situations, with the past 50 years experiencing the most salient changes of all. In Malta, this is primarily thanks to the initiatives carried out by the National Council of Women, which in 2024 will celebrate its 60th year of action.
